What is sound healing?
Sound has been used to heal people all over the world for thousands of years. Chants, songs, bells, and other instruments have been used to bolster and maintain health, and offer us what our hearts yearn for -- connection. Whether it's to family, friends, lovers, or the Divine - sound can move us towards what we long for.
Science now shows us that the brain can literally change, reorganize itself, and create new pathways throughout a lifetime. These changes can take place as a result of experience and training. With intentional strategies - including specific sounds - we can change our brains in ways that are healthy. So sound can literally change the way our brains function, and can affect the production of various chemicals in the body. These changes can affect the health of our organs, our nervous system and our cardiovascular system.
What kinds of conditions can sound healing address?
The easiest answer to this is “stress”. But that word is used so often and so easily, that it’s importance can be underestimated. “Stress”, as defined by Dr. Jon Kabbat-Zinn, is anything which asks the organism to change. Stress causes us to go into “fight or flight” mode, which shuts down many bodily functions except for the use of our muscles.
Things such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, depression, IBS, ADD and ADHD, etc, can all be affected by sound. There are also many pain conditions which can be alleviated by sound. When most people find themselves confronted by any of these diagnoses, the first thing they want is a pill to make it go away. But often, there is no such pill. Or there are many pills – some of which work for a while, some of which have unwanted side effects, and some of which don’t work at all.
While for some people these medicines are absolutely necessary for them to function in their lives, often they only go so far, and the person is left feeling that there’s more. They want their old selves back. They want to feel like they’re living their lives fully, without some kind of “padding” between themselves and their lives.
Sound healing can address those issues. By bypassing the linear, logical thinking we associate with the “left” brain, sound healing has direct access to those parts of the brain that are involved in feelings, intuition and creativity. Patients can, without wrestling with their problems, suddenly come upon new solutions. New paths to healing emerge on their own, as if coming to a clearing in the forest.
